The Applied Finance Project (AFP) gives MFE candidates the opportunity to apply knowledge acquired through MFE coursework to solve a practical, real-world financial engineering problem. By partnering with a corporate client, students develop and showcase their knowledge of quantitative finance, hone their communication skills and delve more deeply into an area of interest beyond the classroom.

AFP projects concentrate on such areas as quantitative trading strategies, portfolio management, risk management, hedging and derivatives valuation, and are sponsored by top organizations that include PIMCO, Citi, PwC, Aspirant, Accenture, AXA Rosenberg, Hyundai Capital and Research Affiliates. Students interact directly with clients, gaining valuable exposure to potential employers and broadening their professional networks.

Eligibility for UCLA Anderson MIF Application Process

  • Bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution undergraduate average GPA of 3.65
  • GMAT/GRE
  • OPT is temporary employment for practical training directly related to the student’s major area of study. The UCLA Anderson MFE program is qualified for STEM, which can extend an international student’s OPT by 24 months, for a total of 36 months.

Private Loans

Many private loans are available to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and international students with a U.S. cosigner. Here’s a list of private lenders used by Anderson students. At Anderson, we believe our students are engaged, courageous, humble, and open. Describe a time when you demonstrated one of these traits in your personal life. (250 words maximum)

This UCLA application essay focuses on the personal side of your candidacy. Anderson is looking for students that fit the mold of the school: engaged, courageous, humble and open. To answer this question, you will provide an example that shows you have these traits. To answer this essay question effectively, take a brief story with plenty of detail, then explain why you think it is relevant to your UCLA application. Though the essay focus on personal traits, using an example of teamwork or leadership at work would be relevant.

Alternatively, using an extracurricular story from an activity you are passionate about would show another angle of your candidacy. Either way, make sure that you are specific and clear in your writing.

UCLA Anderson Master of Finance Interview Questions

Interviews are conducted on an invitation-only basis. Once an application is completed, the Admissions Committee may request an interview with a prospective student. UCLA interviews are generally conducted by the admissions committee or current students on-campus or via Skype.

During the interview, the admissions committee member is actively trying to gauge how solid your motivations for wanting to pursue UCLA Anderson Master of Finance are, how interested you seem in the UCLA program, and if you fit well with the program’s core values. Interviewers often ask many standard MIF interview questions, as well as questions designed to gauge your self-awareness and entrepreneurial mindset. You can also expect numerous follow-up questions.  The UCLA Anderson Master of Finance interview is blind, meaning the interviewer will only have access to your CV. The interview process is for 30 minutes.
